Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about solving, speedcubing, and our 3D solver tools.

How does the Rubik's Cube 3D Solver work?

The solver uses Herbert Kociemba's Two-Phase algorithm. Once you enter your cube's face colors into the 2D Net editor, the system converts the map into a facelet string and offloads solving to a background Web Worker. The worker returns the moves sequence, which is then played back step-by-step on our interactive 3D WebGL model.

Is a Rubik's Cube solvable in under 20 moves?

Yes, any standard 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube state can be solved in 20 moves or fewer (referred to as God's Number). Our solver uses Kociemba's algorithm to find solutions that are typically under 20 moves, matching or approaching optimal solve pathways.

Why does the solver take 3 to 5 seconds to load initially?

To solve scrambles in real time, Kociemba's algorithm requires pre-calculating mathematical lookup arrays (called pruning tables) inside the browser. Generating these tables takes a few seconds when the page loads, but once complete, solves are computed in milliseconds.

What is the difference between CFOP and Roux methods?

CFOP is a highly algorithmic, rotation-heavy method focused on speed execution of cross, first two layers, orientation, and permutation. Roux relies on block-building without cube rotations, solving the left and right sides first, then using M (middle) and U moves to finish. Roux generally has a lower move count (45-50 moves) compared to CFOP (50-60 moves).

What does standard Rubik's Cube notation mean?

Rubik's Cube moves are represented by letters indicating the face to turn: U (Up/Top), D (Down/Bottom), L (Left), R (Right), F (Front), and B (Back). A single letter means a 90-degree clockwise turn. An apostrophe (e.g., U') means counter-clockwise, and a '2' (e.g., U2) means a 180-degree double turn.

What is the fastest Rubik's Cube world record solve?

The official World Cube Association (WCA) world record for the fastest single solve of a 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube is 3.13 seconds, set by Max Park of the USA at the Pride in Pride event in June 2023.

Which speedcube is currently the best on the market?

Popular flagship speedcubes include the GAN 14 MagLev, Moyu Weilong V9, and QiYi Tornado V3. Solvers prefer magnetic MagLev cubes for smooth friction-free rotations.
