How to Improve Your Speedcubing Times: Tips to Break Sub-20

Published by System Administrator

Breaking the 20-second barrier (going 'sub-20') is the ultimate goal for intermediate speedcubers. While getting to sub-50 is easy using the beginner's method, sub-20 requires moving away from layer-by-layer methods and mastering CFOP or Roux. Here are our top training tips:

  • Master F2L: F2L takes up over 50% of the entire solve. Focus on finding corner-edge pairs in the U layer without looking at your hands. Train yourself to execute F2L pairs blindly to develop muscle memory.
  • Practice Slow Turning: It may sound counter-intuitive, but turning slower helps you eliminate pauses by looking ahead to find the next piece while solving the current one.
  • Learn Finger Tricks: Stop turning the cube with your whole wrist. Use finger flicks (using your index and pinky fingers) to make turns. This increases your turns-per-second (TPS) significantly.
