The History of Rubik's Cube: From Prototype to Global Phenomenon

Published by System Administrator

The Rubik's Cube is widely regarded as the best-selling toy in history, with over 450 million units sold worldwide. However, its origin was not as a commercial product, but as an academic tool. In 1974, a young Hungarian professor of architecture named Ernő Rubik was searching for a way to model three-dimensional movement to his design students. He wanted to construct a mechanism where individual blocks could move independently without the structure falling apart.

After experimenting with wood, rubber bands, and paper clips, Rubik built the first working prototype of what he called the 'B┼▒v├Âs Kocka' (Magic Cube). It took him over a month of research and twisting just to solve his own invention for the first time! In 1977, the Magic Cube was patented in Hungary, and by 1980, it was licensed to Ideal Toy Corporation, which renamed it the Rubik's Cube for international release. It instantly sparked a global craze, leading to the first World Championship in Budapest in 1982.
